About Susan Leclaire

Canadian fibre artist

I started making hooked rugs to connect with a traditional craft and bring a sense of calm into daily life. My love of the tactile qualities of textiles quickly evolved into a deeper exploration of colour, composition, and design.

Working with a wide variety of yarns and fabrics on linen backing, I create original textile artworks that blend traditional rug hooking techniques with a contemporary aesthetic. Living in an urban environment, I am drawn to bold colour and rich texture as a visual and emotional counterpoint to the built landscape around me. Each piece is carefully designed and constructed by hand, then either mounted on board or finished in a custom hardwood frame made by a local craftsperson.

Rooted in an East Coast Canadian tradition and reimagined through a modern lens, my work explores the expressive potential of texture, colour, and form to create pieces that bring warmth, character, and a sense of connection to a space.
